Basketball

The Los Angeles Lakers staved off elimination with a 103-98 win over the Boston Celtics. The Celtics covered the spread and the Over hit. In last night’s game Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom showed up and actually contributed; first time all series. Ray Allen struggled from the field and Kevin Garnett did not play up to his normal ability. Combine that with Kendrick Perkins not being in the line-up and there is your story line for Game 5.

Game 6 is set for Tuesday in Boston where the line is currently Boston -3.5 and the Total is set at 192.5. Now help me understand something. The Lakers are no less than a 7.5 point favorite for the 3 games in LA. In the first two games in Boston the Celtics were favored once and were a dog in the other game. The Celtics are 5-0 ATS in this series; yet the line is inly 3.5?!?! I don’t get it, but I will take advantage of it. The Celtics will win tomorrow night and cover . . . easily. Early pick for you, Celtics 5-stars.

Baseball

Interleague at AL: The Tigers stay hot sweeping a 3-game set from the Dodgers, winning yesterday 5-4 . . . The Indians beat the Padres 7-3 . . . The Cubs took 2 of 3 from the Blue Jays, 7-4 was last night’s score . . . The Priates eked out a 5-4 win in 10 over the Orioles . . . Florida salvaged a game versus Tampa Bay 9-3 . . . The Rockies took 2 of 3 from the White Sox winning 5-3 . . . The Nationals beat the Mariners 6-2 . . . The Angels defeated the Braves 2-0.

Interleague at NL: The Rangers and Mets split a DH. Texas won 8-7 and the Mets won the second one 4-2 . . . . The Red Sox 9-0 over the Reds . . . The Brewers avoided a sweep by the Twins wining 4-2 . . . The Yankees scored 13 and held the Astros scoreless . . . The A’s swept the Bay this weekend, last night it was 5-3 OAK . . . The Roayls had a 5 run 4th and beat the Diamondbacks 8-3.

National League: In the lone non-Interleague game the Cardinals took advantage of the Phillites inability to throw the baseball and won in 10, 7-6.

Who’s Hot? / Who’s Not?: The Tigers have won 6 straight and the Yankees have won 4 in a row . . .The Dodgers have dropped 5 in a row as have the Astros.

Basketball

The Boston Celtics overcame a huge first half deficit to win Game 4 of the NBA Finals 97-91 over the Los Angeles Lakers. The Celtics lead the series 3-1 with Game 5 set for Sunday in Los Angeles. The Lakers led 35-14 after one quarter and held a 58-40 lead at the half. The 3rd quarter however belonged to the Celtics outscoring LA 31-15 and in the 4th 26-18. This series is now over. The Lakers show they don’t have what it takes, and last night was the game they needed. They went from having this game locked up and the series evened at 2, to being down 3-1 and being known as chokers.

Baseball

American League: The Tigers finished a 3-game sweep of the White Sox with a 2-1 win . . . Kansas City defeated Texas 6-5 . . . The Red Sox, powered by a Mike Lowell grand-slam, beat the Orioles 9-2 . . . The Indians keep the Twins slide alive, winning 12-2 . . . Hideki Matsui hit a grand-slam on his 34th birthday giving the Yankees all their runs in a 4-1 win.

National League: The Pirates move to within 1 game of .500 with a 7-5 win over the Nationals . . . The Mets continue to blow games losing to the Diamondbacks 5-4 in 10 innings . . . The Brewers got 5 runs in the 2nd and beat the Astros 9-6 . . . The Cubs got a Jim Edmonds HR in the 9th to tie the game and then won it in the 11th, 3-2 over the Braves. That was the Braves 21st consecutive 1-run road loss tying the MLB record . . . The Giants beat the Rockies 10-7 . . . The Padres got more good pitching, defeating the Dodgers 9-0 . . . The Phillies avoided being swept by the Marlins, winning 3-0 . . . The Reds got 4 in the 7th and beat the Cardinals 6-2.

Who’s Hot? / Who’s Not?: The Cubs have won 4 straight and the Braves have lost 6 straight.

Basketball

The Los Angeles Lakers took Game 3 from the Boston Celtics 87-81, the Celtics covered and the Under hit. The series is now 2-1 Boston, with Game 4 scheduled for Thursday in LA. One thing was made crystal clear for me last night, the Boston Celtics are a better team than the Los Angeles Lakers. This isn’t up for debate, its a fact. It doesn’t mean the Celtics are guaranteed to win the series, but all the things we heard about the Lakers are not true. Pau Gasol has not shown up for 3 games, Lamar Odom has gone back into the shell I thought he had shed during the Spurs series, and the bench is better with the Celtics, it isn’t even close. The difference last night was that Paul Pierce did not contribute offensively; he had 6 points.

The line for Thursday is LA -8 and the Total is set at 192. That is too many points and it is caused by the perception that the Lakers are better than they really are. The Lakers winning last night only adds to the public’s mis-perception of the Lakers.

Baseball

American League: The Orioles scored in bunches, beating the Red Sox 10-6 . . . The Tigers showed a little something yesterday, beating the AL Central leading White Sox 6-4. Is it a changing tide? . . . The Indians kept the Twins sliding down the standings, winning 1-0 . . . The Blue Jays beat the Mariners 3-1 . . . The Rangers beat the Royals 6-5 on the strength of a 4 run 8th inning . . . The Yankees scored in the first and the ninth, beating Oakland 3-1 . . . The Angels beat the Rays 6-1.

National League: The Nationals scored twice in the 9th to beat the Pirates 7-6 . . . The Mets and Diamondbacks were tied at 5 in the 8th, the D-backs won 9-5 . . . The Marlins cooled the Phillies for at least one night, 5-4 . . . The Cardinals took care of the Reds 7-2 . . . The Cubs overcame an early deficit and beat the Braves 10-5 . . . The Astros and Brewers are neck and neck, Houston won last night 6-1 . . . The Rockies beat the Giants 10-5 . . . The Dodgers took care of the Padres 7-2.

Who’s Hot? / Who’s Not?: There are no winning streaks of note . . . The Twins have lost 6 in a row, the Mets have lost 5 and the Braves have lost 4.

Basketball

Everyone I talked to was still shocked by the way Game 2 went between the Celtics and Lakers. Namely, that the Lakers were so impotent to do anything. Everyone also expects the officiating to do a 180 and to favor the Lakers. What needs to change for the Lakers, aside from the venue, is their lack of aggression on offense. They have spent the first two game settling for jumpers and other low percentage shots instead of attacking the basket. They also need their bench, which was supposed to be a strength, to contribute something, so far the bench has been awful.

The Lakers are 8-0 at home in this post-season and have won 14 straight home games going back to March 28. The Lakers are 9.5 point favorites and the Total is set at 195.5. Everyone fully expects it to be a different series now that they are back in LA. The Celtics have struggled on the road though they did win twice on the road against the Pistons. 9.5 is just so many damn points! Some aren’t fazed by it, saying that all the fortunes will change on the West Coast, I just don’t know if I believe it. Yes the Lakers are good at home, but they are going to go from being 24 points down to almost a double digit favorite?!?! Damn you Vegas, you are just messing with my head!!!! For the post-season I am doing well so I feel no urgency to play catch-up. Not to mention that playing catch-up is a violation of a Dean Principle. OK, enough stalling, I am taking the Celtics and the 9.5 points for 2-stars. I also believe the Over is the better bet.

Vinny Del Negro is the new coach of the Chicago Bulls . . . Terry Porter is the new coach of the Phoenix Suns . . . Michael Curry is the new coach of the Detroit Pistons.

Baseball

Ken Griffey hit his 600th Home Run, only the 6th player to ever reach that milestone. The other players to hit 600+ are: Barry Bonds, Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, Willie Mays and Sammy Sosa. Congratulations Ken!

American League: The Royals salvaged a split of their 4-game series with the Yankees, winning 3-2 on a Jose Guillen HR in the 9th off of Mariano Rivera . . . The White Sox stay red-hot sweeping the Twins with a 7-5 win. The White Sox entered June with a 1 game lead, it is now 6.5 . . . The Tigers can do nothing right, losing 8-2 to the Indians . . . Seattle beat Toronto in 10 innings, 3-2 . . . Tampa Bay wins impressively over the AL West lead Angels, 13-4.

National League: The Pirates beat the Diamondbacks 5-3 . . . The Reds, powered by Griffey’s 600th HR beat the Marlins 9-4 . . . The Nationals got a little closer, but still lost, 3-2 to the Giants.

Who’s Hot? / Who’s Not?:The White Sox extended their winning streak to 7 while the Padres remain at 5. The Phillies win streak is still 4 where they are joined by the SF Giants . . . The Twins have dropped 5 in a row while the Mets and Nationals are both at 4 straight losses.

Michael Strahan announced his retirement. He was an out-spoken player and a very good player as well. He rounded out his resume with a Super Bowl last year and I think did the right thing by walking away now. I never played at the level of the NFL, but one thing I look on with much pride in my own career is that the last time I walked off the football field as a player it was as a winner, and going out with that memory is infinitely better than the alternative.

The Boston Celtics took a 2-0 lead over the Los Angeles Lakers with a 108-102 vicotry last night. The Celtics covered and the Over hit. The Celtics held a 24 point lead before the Lakers cut the lead to 2, 104-102. The Lakers scored 41 4th quarter points, but couldn’t make the plays needed in the last minute of the game. The usual suspects did it for the Celtics, but throw in the name Leon Powe who had 21 points in 15 minutes of playing time. Rajon Rondo also had 16 assists. Game 3 is Tuesday in LA, the line has opened at LA -9 and the Total is set at 195.

The Lakers are 8-0 at home in the post-season and they are going to need to make it 9-0 if they expect to make a series of these Finals. The Celtics enjoyed a major advantage from the foul line, getting there 38 times compared to the Lakers’ 10. Phil Jackson of course thought it was intentional and that the refs were horrible. Then again Phil Jackson may be the biggest cry-baby coach that has ever paced a sideline. The Lakers horrendous defense could be a more likely cause for the foul shooting disparity. The Lakers supposed stellar bench has been non-existent so far in this series.

There have been only 3 teams that have overcome 0-2 deficits to win the NBA Championship, Boston in 1969, Portland in 1977 and Miami in 2006.

Baseball

American League: The Tigers are dragging the Indians, both disappointing teams, toward the AL Central basement after taking a 5-2 decision . . . The Yankees moved 1 game over .500 with a 6-3 win over the Royals . . . Toronto broke a 4-game slide with a 5-4 win over the Orioles . . . The Red Sox got stellar pitching and beat the Mariners 2-1 . . . The White Sox continue to play well after Ozzie Guillen’s tirade, beating the Twins 12-2 . . . The Angels had their winning streak stopped with a 7-3 loss to the A’s in 12 innings. How does a road team lose by 4 in extra innings? Only one way, a walk off grand-slam . . . The Rangers salvaged a game from Tampa Bay, winning 6-3.

National League: The Marlins scored a bunch of runs against the Reds this past weekend, yesterday they won 9-2 . . . The Phillies completed a 3-game sweep of the Braves in Atlanta with a 6-3 win . . . The Pirates had a 5 spot in the 4th inning to beat the Diamondbacks 6-4 . . . The Nationals scored some runs, but not enough losing 6-3 to the SF Giants . . . St. Louis scored all their runs in the 7th inning, beating the Astros 5-4 . . . The Brewers avoided a sweep at the hands of the Rockies, winning in Colorado 3-2 . . . The Padres swept the Mets 8-6 . . . The Cubs took a 3-1 game from the Dodgers.

Who’s Hot? / Who’s Not?: The White Sox are riding a 6 game winning streak while the Padres have won 5 straight and the Phillies have won 4 straight . . . On the losing side, the Twins and Mets have each lost 4 straight.

Basketball

Tonight’s Action: Game 2 of the NBA Finals tips-off at an unacceptable 9:00pm tonight. I will cut the networks a break for games that are played on the West Coast to have a 9pm EST start, but a game on the East Coast should not start after 8pm, it only makes sense. No matter the start time, the Celtics are 1 point UNDERDOGS at home. Is this the same Celtics team that has lost only once at home in the postseason? The same Celtics team that just beat this Laker team by 10 the other night?! Granted there are injuries, but the line has moved 3 points since it opened and it reversed the favorite and the dog. What does this mean?

It has moved in this direction because the money has been pouring in on the Lakers. Perhaps you foresaw this and took the action of getting the Lakers at +1 or even +2. Essentially this game is just picking a winner and the line movement tells who were the public is going. The movement, coupled with my belief that the Lakers will win, sprinkled with the words of Tmac guaranteeing a Laker win in the first two games of this series give me the confidence necessary to make the Lakers a 5-star pick.

The Total is 190.5. The Over is the better bet.

Baseball

American League:The Yankees and Royals played a thrilling game, highlighted by Jose Guillen’s 7 RBIs for the Royals and Jonny Damon’s 6-6, 6 RBI, walk off hit, performances. The Yankees won 12-11 . . . The Orioles moved a game over .500 with a 9-5 win in Toronto . . . The Tigers beat the Indians 8-4 . . . Boston looked more like Boston, beating the Mariners 11-3 . . . The White Sox laid one on the Twins 11-2 . . . The Texas Rangers have scored 10 or more runs 11 times this season, the most in the major leagues. They could’ve used some of those runs yesterday as the dropped a 5-4 decision to the Rays . . . The Angles won their 7th straight, 5-3 over the A’s.

National League: The Dodgers beat the NL Central leading Cubs 7-3 . . . The Phillies continue to thrive, beating the Braves 6-2 . . . Arizona scored in the top of the 9th to beat the Pirates 4-3 . . . The Cardinals doubled-up the Astros 8-4. The Astros had 15 hits in the loss . . . The Marlins scored 3 in the home-half of the 9th to beat the Reds 8-7 . . . The Nationals continue to not score, losing 6-0 to the Giants . . . Colorado got well against the Brewers, winning again 7-2 . . . The Padres won their 4th consecutive 2-1 game, beating the Mets by that score. The Padres are the first team to ever team to win 4 straight, 2-1.

Who’s Hot? / Who’s Not?: The Angels have won 7 straight . . . The White Sox have won 5 in a row . . . The Padres and Rockies have each won 4 straight . . . The Blue Jays have lost 4 in a row.

Game 2 of the NBA Finals is tomorrow night in Boston. The line has moved down, from Boston -2 to Boston -1, the total has moved down to 190. Tmac said in the preview show that the Lakers will win at least one of the games in Boston. After dropping the first game, a game they could’ve won, I believe the Lakers will make the necessary adjustments, shoot the ball better and win. The rims in Boston are unique and cause teams trouble the first time the play in Boston. Detroit went from 79 Game 1 points to 103 Game 2 points, throughout the course of the year, the rule was that a team scored more points the second time around in Boston; the exception was with mostly poor shooting teams, i.e.the Hawks and the Cavs. The Lakers will score tomorrow and they will run, it is hot and it will be hot in there, just like the old days. The Lakers will get up and down the court, and the Celtics will get caught up in it and not be able to keep up.

We will dive into the game a little more tomorrow, but I believe you can tell where I am going to put my money.

Baseball

American League: Detroit came home but continues to struggle, losing to Cleveland 4-2. The Tigers are now 12 games under .500 . . . Kansas City broke an 11-game road losing streak, beating the Yankees 2-1 . . . Boston got a ton of punishment off the field and then got some more on it. The Mariners broke a 4-game losing streak, winning 8-0 . . . The Orioles climbed back to .500 beating the Blue Jays 6-5 . . . Yet another team scored double-digits on the Rangers, this time the Rays got well after dropping 3 in Boston, Rays 12-4 . . . The White Sox scored 10 and beat the Twins 10-6 . . . The Angels stay hot, beating the A’s 3-1.

National League: The Diamondbacks beat the Pirates 3-1, Brandon Webb got his 11th win of the year, the first to hit that total so far this season . . . The Reds beat the Marlins 11-3 . . . In a great game, the Phillies beat the Braves 4-3 in 10 innings . . . The Nationals continue to be bad, losing 10-1 to the SF Giants . . . Houston goes 2 games over .500, beating the Cardinals 6-1 . . .The Rockies scored 5 times in the 8th and beat the Brewers 6-4 . . . The Padres won their third straight 2-1 game, beating the Mets by, well, 2-1 . . . The Dodgers got great pitching and held the Cubs to 4 hits, winning 3-0.

Who’s Hot? / Who’s Not?: The Angles winning steak has reached 6, while the White Sox have attained 4 . . . The Tigers have lost 4 in a row.

Basketball

The Boston Celtics took Game 1 of the NBA Finals last night 98-88, covering the 2.5 point line with the Under hitting, just like The Dean told ya! It was a great game, very entertaining with many questions answered. The spotlight was stolen by Paul Pierce who did just about everything. He had a 4-point play, he made huge shots in the second half, he was carried off the court, he came back down the tunnel, he rode a stationary bike in the crowd . . . he did it all. Doc Rivers also proved he can coach right along with Phil Jackson. Doc found ways to control Kobe, though Kobe missed some open looks. The combination of Ray Allen, James Posey and Paul Pierce was effective. Additionally, Doc made great use of his two very different point guards. The veteran Sam Cassell contributed a lot early while Rondo sat the bench, and just as Sam started to make some mistakes in the last 6 minutes, in came Rondo who played an energetic and versatile game.

The Celtics dispelled the rumors that the Lakers are more talented. The Celtics also proved their bench can is just as valuable as the Lakers. Cassell, Posey, Brown all made major contributions. Kobe shot 9 of 26 from the field, don’t expect that happen again, but Kobe did not play poorly. He got his teammates involved, he constantly found the open man and he played good defense. This series is going to be great. Game 2 is Sunday in Boston. The Celtics opened as 2 point favorites and the Total is set at 190.5

Baseball

There was a lot of action in Boston last night. The Red Sox first fought the Rays and then they fought themselves. Additionally, the Sox suffered some injuries. Jacoby Ellsbury and Manny Ramirez left the game with injuries. Before that, there was a bench clearing brawl initiated when Coco Crisp was hit by a pitch, which was directly because of a hard slide Crisp performed by Crisp the game before. Ellsbury hurt his wrist making a diving catch and Manny had a leg injury while batting. Combine this with David Ortiz being out and it will be interesting to see how healthy the Sox stay and if this opens the door for the rest of the AL East to catch up. Most importantly, the Sox completed a 3 game sweep of the Rays.

American League: The Red Sox took a 7-1 decision from the Rays completing a sweep of their series . . . The Yankees won in dramatic fashion over the Blue Jays 9-8 on a Jason Giambi walk-off HR . . . The Orioles gave up 12 hits to the Twins but only allowed 2 runs, winning 3-2 . . . Texas defeated the Indians 9-4, the first win in the series where the winner didn’t score double digits . . . The White Sox got well against the Royals completing a 3-game sweep with a 6-2 win.

National League: The Phillies beat the Reds 5-0, moving 10 games over .500 . . . The Cardinals and Nationals split a double-header. St. Louis won the first game 4-1, while the Nationals won the second 10-9 in 10 innings on an Elijah Dukes walk-off HR . . . The Braves beat the Marlins 7-5. Chipper Jones hit his 400th HR . . . The Pirates scored 3 in the first and hung on 4-3 over the Astros . . . The Mets traveled down the West Coast and lost to the Padres 2-1. The second straight 2-1 win for the Padres . . . The Cubs scored in the top of the 9th to beat the Dodgers 5-4.

Who’s Hot? / Who’s Not?: The hottest teams had the night off so they are the same as before. The Brewers have won 6 in a row, the Angels 5 and the As 4 . . . The Mariners had the night off and are mired in a 4-game losing streak.

Tonight’s Action: The NBA Finals will tip-off tonight at 9:00pm in Boston in an old-school matchup of Lakers vs. Celtics. The Celtics are 2.5 point favorites and the Total is set at 191.5. There will be a ton of emotion early before both teams settle into their groove, that seems to make the Under a good wager, and the downward movement of the Total since it opened at 194 tells you how the rest of gamblers are viewing this game. But The Dean is not a Total player, so you do what you need to with that. With the game, the Celtics have no starters that were in the Finals before but they have veterans on their bench that have been. That calming influence and experience will be felt in Game 1. The Celtics were the best team in the regular season when it came to Ws and Ls and their home-court dominance is what carried them in the playoffs.

There are many matchups that are intriguing, some that are scary and others that are yet determined. With it all out there, I will be laying 3-stars on the Celtics minus the points tonight while paying special attention to the methodologies implemented by both coaches.

For the series, The Dean says Celtics in 7. If you don’t like that prediction, perhaps you would rather side with Tmac by the Bay who likes the Lakers in 6.

Baseball

The Detroit Red Wings defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 to capture the Lord Stanley’s Cup.

Big Brown got the #1 post for Saturday’s running of the Belmont Stakes. Not the best position to start in, but neither was his position at the Kentucky Derby where he started at the furthest out position and still won.

Basketball

One more night until there is some actual action. Tomorrow, finally the Finals will get under way. Game 1, Celtics-Lakers in Boston. Celtics are still 2.5 point favorites and the Total is as low as 191.5 and as high as 193.5. Majority of books have it at 192. Defense must be on people’s minds as the Total has moved a little every day. If defense does carry the day I believe that will favor the Celtics. Not that the Lakers don’t or can’t play defense, but it is more of Boston’s signature and they are the home team.

You heard Tmac by the Bay say it first, and then you saw it happen. Flip Saunders was fired by the Detroit Pistons yesterday after taking the team to three straight Conference Championships, and losing all three. Joe Dumars, the Pistons GM, did not mix words when he said that the team had become complacent. Agreed. On top of that, Saunders just isn’t a very good coach. It never seemed that the players were really listening to him and it never seemed that he contributed anything to them. Reports are that Michael Curry, an assistant on the staff, will become head coach. I like Tmac’s suggestion made to me yesterday better . . . Bill Laimbeer.

Baseball

American League: The Red Sox welcomed The Rays to competitive baseball with a 7-4 win . . . Joba threw 62 pitches (pussy) and the Yankees lost 9-3 to the Bue Jays. The Jays had a 6 run 7th inning . . . Texas turned the tables on the Indians with a 12-7 win . . . The Orioles beat the Twins 5-3 in Minnesota . . . The White Sox got better against the Royals 9-5 . . . The Tigers dropped another tough one 5-4 in 10 innings to the Athletics . . . The Angels kept the Mariners down 5-4.

National League:Atlanta defeated Florida 5-4 . . . The Phillies took a close one from the Reds 3-2 . . . Houston’s defense carried them over the Pirates 2-0 . . . The Nationals continue to not score many runs, losing 6-1 to the Cardinals . . . The Brewers took a 7-1 decision from the slumping Diamondbacks . . . The Cubs won again, 9-6 over the Padres . . . The Rockies broke their 8 game losing streak, 3-0 over the Dodgers . . . The Mets put up an 8-spot in the 5th and got Pedro a win in his season debut 9-6 over the Giants.

Who’s Hot? / Who’s Not?: The Cubs stay hot winning their 9th in a row . . . The Brewers have won 5 straight and the Angels have won 4 straight . . . There are no losing streaks greater than 3 games right now.
