The Los Angeles Lakers versus the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals. Is there a more famous championship match-up than that?! There will be no talk this year of poor TV ratings, no San Antonio-Cleveland to get the TV execs all upset. Lakers-Celtics, just like the glory days. I am excited, even though I had neither of these teams making the Finals. The Celtics finished off the Pistons last night 89-81, outscoring the Pistons 29-13 in the 4th quarter. When I left the airplane last night at JFK the Pistons had taken their largest lead of the game. ( I flew JetBlue so I was able to enjoy the game. The Dean loves JetBlue.) At that moment it looked like what was expected. The Pistons were showing their experience and were going to pull Game 6 out and send it back to Boston. By the time I got to the bar to get something to eat the game was over and I was shocked to see Paul Pierce being interviewed and asked about finally making the Finals. Pierce was the Celtic with the most playoff games (57) with no Finals appearance. Hats off to the Celtics, they did what I did not think they could.
Granted the Pistons were not 100% healthy, but is there any professional sports team that is 100% healthy after the first week of their season? The difference in this series was Tayshaun Prince’s inability to do anything and Kendrick Perkins dominance on the boards. The Celtics got more loose balls and made more big shots.
The series will open Thursday in Boston, the Celtics are currently 3.5 point favorites. Boston won both games this year. However, both games were played in 2007 and prior to the Lakers being the team they are today, i.e. adding Gasol for one thing. You want an early prediction from The Dean? Celtics in 7, though I reserve the right to not have that be my final say on the winner of the series.
The Kansas City Royals dropped their 12th straight game . . . Cubs came back from a 9-1 deficit in the bottom of the 6th to win 10-9 . . . Phillies took the NL East lead with win over the Marlins . . . Cliff Floyd walk-off solo HR in bottom of the 9th . . . SF Giants turn a triple play 5-4-3.
Who’s Hot? / Who’s Not?: 5s are hot and they are not. Longest current winning streak is 5 shared by the Phillies and the Cubs. 5 is the second longest current losing streak, two teams here as well, Arizona and Colorado.
An article about Good or Bad Coaches is on ESPN.com. I am a big proponent of being as aware as fits your life, in the realm of the coaching world.
Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Finals is tonight in Pittsburgh. The Red Wings lead the series 2-1. I do no wager on hockey as I don’t know enough about it. One news item of interest for those that do like to lay a little action on the NHL, Tomas Holmstrom of the Red Wings may not play this evening. According to what I know, he is a top-line player and presents a challenge to the Wings.
