The Los Angeles Lakers versus the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals. Is there a more famous championship match-up than that?! There will be no talk this year of poor TV ratings, no San Antonio-Cleveland to get the TV execs all upset. Lakers-Celtics, just like the glory days. I am excited, even though I had neither of these teams making the Finals. The Celtics finished off the Pistons last night 89-81, outscoring the Pistons 29-13 in the 4th quarter. When I left the airplane last night at JFK the Pistons had taken their largest lead of the game. ( I flew JetBlue so I was able to enjoy the game. The Dean loves JetBlue.) At that moment it looked like what was expected. The Pistons were showing their experience and were going to pull Game 6 out and send it back to Boston. By the time I got to the bar to get something to eat the game was over and I was shocked to see Paul Pierce being interviewed and asked about finally making the Finals. Pierce was the Celtic with the most playoff games (57) with no Finals appearance. Hats off to the Celtics, they did what I did not think they could.

Granted the Pistons were not 100% healthy, but is there any professional sports team that is 100% healthy after the first week of their season? The difference in this series was Tayshaun Prince’s inability to do anything and Kendrick Perkins dominance on the boards. The Celtics got more loose balls and made more big shots.

The series will open Thursday in Boston, the Celtics are currently 3.5 point favorites. Boston won both games this year. However, both games were played in 2007 and prior to the Lakers being the team they are today, i.e. adding Gasol for one thing. You want an early prediction from The Dean? Celtics in 7, though I reserve the right to not have that be my final say on the winner of the series.

Baseball

The Kansas City Royals dropped their 12th straight game . . . Cubs came back from a 9-1 deficit in the bottom of the 6th to win 10-9 . . . Phillies took the NL East lead with win over the Marlins . . . Cliff Floyd walk-off solo HR in bottom of the 9th . . . SF Giants turn a triple play 5-4-3.

Who’s Hot? / Who’s Not?: 5s are hot and they are not. Longest current winning streak is 5 shared by the Phillies and the Cubs. 5 is the second longest current losing streak, two teams here as well, Arizona and Colorado.

Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Finals is tonight in Pittsburgh. The Red Wings lead the series 2-1. I do no wager on hockey as I don’t know enough about it. One news item of interest for those that do like to lay a little action on the NHL, Tomas Holmstrom of the Red Wings may not play this evening. According to what I know, he is a top-line player and presents a challenge to the Wings.

Congratulations to the Los Angeles Lakers on winning the Western Conference Championship last night. 100-92 was the final score, which makes the game a Push and the Under hit by a point. The Lakers won the series 4-1 and will face the winner of the Boston Celtics and Detroit Pistons series. If you did not watch the game, and you had either the Lakers -8 or the Spurs +8, this morning you are talking about Sasha Vujacic. The Spurs knocked down a few late, meaningless baskets to cut the lead to 5 with under 8 seconds to go. The Lakers move the ball up the court, as the Spurs admit defeat and half-heartedly pressure the ball. With 3 seconds left the Lakers throw the ball to Vujacic who with 1 second left released a three-point shot that hit nothing but net and the game pushed. I am not too upset with Sasha because I know that for every game that is lost like that, I will win one the same.

Tonights action: Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals is tonight in Detroit where the Pistons must win in order to force Game 7. The Pistons are favored by 5.5 and the Total is set at 175. The Pistons are 5-0 this postseason after a loss and if you recall the Celtics have won only one road game in these playoffs. I have been saying this will go 7 games and I still feel strong about that. 5.5 is not a lot to cover so I am going 4-stars on the Pistons tonight.

Baseball

The Kansas City Royals lost their 11th straight game, while the Arizona Diamondbacks, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Colorado Rockies have all lost 4 straight . . . .The following teams all have 4 game winning streaks: Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs and Minnesota Twins.

The Boston Celtics are one win away from going to the NBA Finals after last night’s 106-102 victory over the Detroit Pistons. The Celtics now lead the series 3-2. Boston had a 17 point lead in the 3rd quarter but saw it whittled down to 1 before closing it out. Most importantly, the Pistons covered the 6 point line. Game 6 is Friday in Detroit. The Over hit.

Tonights action: The Lakers are a win away from going to the NBA Finals and will have their first of three potential shots tonight in Los Angeles where they haven’t lost since March 28th. Yesterday I spoke briefly of why that gives my confidence in the Spurs, here is why. In the last week streaks of all types have been snapped. The Celtics winning streak at home, the Celtics losing streak on the road, the Spurs winning streak at home, etc. The line tonight is 8 and to be honest the way the Spurs have played my confidence is wavering. But I don’t quit and I am not going to quit on the Spurs. I will take the Spurs for 2-stars tonight. The Total is set at 193.

Baseball

The Philadelphia Phillies have the longest winning streak, 4 . . . The Kansas City Royals have lost 10 straight.

Basketball

The Los Angeles Lakers have taken a 3-1 lead in the Western Conference Finals after defeating the San Antonio Spurs 93-91. The Lakers were getting 4, so the obviously covered. The Under also hit. The loss snapped a 13-game home playoff winning streak for the Spurs and it puts their collective backs to the wall as the travel to Los Angeles for Game 5 on Thursday where the Lakers have not lost since March 28th. Believe it or not, all of that gives me confidence in the Spurs. But we will discuss that tomorrow.

Tonights action: Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals tips-off in Boston tonight. The Celtics are 6 point favorites and the Total is 173. Here is my dilemma with picking this game. I find myself rooting for the Pistons, so I need to check myself. So I need to bring it down to basics. The basics are, these two teams were the best in the Eastern Conference all year and this series was hugely anticipated. Additionally, the Celtics have gone to 7 games in their previous two series. If you believe this series will go 7, which I do, then what is more likely the Celtics and Pistons each winning their next home games and then squaring off back in Boston for Game 7? Or, each to win on the other’s home court? I believe the former is the smarter pick and with that I SHOULD lay something down on the Celtics tonight. But I don’t want to. I am laying 2-stars on the Pistons.

Baseball

Rare bad news for the Boston Red Sox when pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka left last night’s game with what appeared to be a back injury but is being called shoulder fatigue . . . Rare good news for the New York Mets, Pedro Martinez may start June 3 . . . Manny Ramirez hit his 499th HR last night . . . 9 Home Runs were hit in the Yankee-Oriole game last night in Baltimore.

Who’s Hot? The Oakland Athletics are holders of the current longest winning streak at 5. No other team has won more than 3 in a row currently. Who’s Not? The Kansas City Royals have now lost 9 in a row . . . The Detroit Tigers have lost 3 in a row.

The Eastern Conference Finals are all tied up at 2-2 after the Detroit Pistons defeated the Boston Celtics 94-75 last night. The Pistons covered the 6 point line, giving The Dean back-to-back 5-star wins. The Under also hit. The Pistons controlled the game from the beginning though the Celtics did their best to keep it close despite their offensive struggles. Game 5 is in Boston on Wednesday.

Tonights action: The Spurs will try and emulate the Pistons tonight in Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals as they go for win #2 in that series. The Lakers took the first two games in LA while San Antonio won Game 3. Tonight the Spurs are 4 point favorites and the Total is set at 192. Here is a question for you: “Why is the opening line 4 today when it was 6 the other day when the Spurs covered the 6 points with ease?” I don’t know, but don’t let it scare you. The Spurs will tie this series up tonight, because that is what they do. Manu Ginobili is listed as day-to-day, due to that I am lowering my rank on the Spurs but still laying on their side, for 4-stars.

Baseball

Chase Utley had 6 RBIs as the Phillies scored 20 runs yesterday against the Rockies . . .The Phillies’ 20 runs against the Rockies comes the day after they scored 15 runs against the Astros . . . Brandon Webb of the Arizona Diamondbacks lost his second straight decision. This comes after winning his first nine . . . Toronto’s winning streak reached 5 games, the current longest. Tampa and Oakland have each won 4 straight . . . Kansas City has dropped 8 in a row and Seattle has dropped 7 in a row.

Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals went to the San Antonio Spurs, a 5-star pick by The Dean yesterday. The 103-84 final allowed the Spurs to easily cover the 5 point spread and the Total was Under the 192. The series is now in favor of LA, 2-1 with Game 4 set for tomorrow night in San Antonio.

Tonights action: Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals is tonight in Detroit where the Pistons need to get a win at home in order to avoid falling into a 3-1 hole, that will be nearly insurmountable to climb out of. The Pistons are 6 point favorites and the Total is set at 175. There are many questions on the Pistons, such as the health of Chauncey Billups, and will the sharp-shooting Pistons find their way out of hiding? I don’t know the answers to those questions, but I do know the following. The Pistons have done it before. The Celtics struggled for a win on the road this entire post-season, they finally got one which has put home-court back in their advantage. Now that Boston has achieved that win, now that they can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that they don’t HAVE to win another road game the rest of the way, will they let up a little bit? I say yes. Its the NBA dammit, and even if you don’t believe in conspiracies do you REALLY think this series isn’t going AT LEAST 6 games if not the required 7?!?!? I do. Look for the Pistons to win this game going away. I am making the Pistons a 5-star pick today! Back to back 5-stars plays, get on board!

So I am out to dinner on Saturday night in White Plains, NY at a restaurant named La Bocca. It was rather early, 730ish, and the place had a decent crowd for that time. I take my seat with my two female guests and quickly place a drink order and begin to peruse the menu. To my right is a husband, wife and their pre-teen son who is playing one of those hand-held game things. The husband is directly to my right and there is something awfully familiar about him. Since I am not in favor of gawking, I try to be slick and check out the decor of the restaurant while trying to sneak a peek. I finally get a good look at the dude, and it is none other than the new coach of the New York Knicks, Mike D’Antoni. I briefly think about saying something to him, but I am not that guy and never will be. Coach deserves to eat his meals without being bothered. However, I was going to eavesdrop. Here is what I heard. They are house hunting and Mrs. D’Antoni is much more into it than he is, go figure. They are looking in Connecticut as well, though Coach seemed less than enthused about the Nutmeg state. The one house they looked at o Saturday is going to need new hardwood floors, and lastly, but with the most juice, according to Mrs. D’Antoni all Coach has to do next year is win 24 games. For those that don’t know, the Knicks won 23 games this past year. Rest assured Knick fans, Coach does not share his wife’s views on how success will be determined in year one. They had a notepad on the table that was used for various purposes, such as floor-plans though I didn’t see any offensive sets drawn. They other purpose was to write down names or other bits of information without speaking them out loud, thus preventing me from getting all the stuff they spoke of. They are a couple that are obviously trained in the are of speaking privately in public, though Mrs. D’Antoni needs to keep practicing.

Baseball

The Tampa Bay Rays are in first place in the AL East . . . Eric Byrnes of the Arizona Diamondbacks hit his first career Grand Slam . . . Padres and Reds played an 18 inning game, SD won. SD played a 22 inning game earlier this year . . . The New York Yankees have won 5 in a row and the Toronto Blue Jays have won 4 in a row, the two longest current winning streaks . . . Kansas City Royals have dropped 7 straight, the Seattle Mariners have dropped 6 straight and the Baltimore Orioles have dropped 5 straight.

The Boston Celtics reversed the trouble they got themselves into the other night, by doing what hadn’t been done since the playoffs started, win on the road. After dropping their first home game of the playoffs the Celtics were faced with getting their first road win of the post-season and they did so 94-80 over the Detroit Pistons. The Celtics covered the spread the Under hit. Game 4 is Monday in Detroit.

Tonights action: Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals tips off in San Antonio at 830 this evening. The Lakers hold a 2-0 advantage and in both games have been impressive. Game 1 saw a 20-point Spurs lead go by the way-side and Game 2 saw a dominant 30-point Laker win. What will today hold? The Spurs are 5 point favorites and the Total is set at 192. In the two regular season games the Spurs covered 8-point lines both times. In terms of the total one was Under by 2 and one was Over by 1. I believe in the Spurs, and even if you don’t do you really think the Lakers are going to win 3 straight against the Spurs? I don’t. I feel so strongly about this that I am taking the Spurs for 5-stars!

Baseball

Justin Duchscherer of the Oakland A’s took a no-hitter into the 7th inning against the Boston Red Sox, now that would have been an impressive no-hitter . . . The Indians won breaking a 7 game losing streak, the Mets also won, that leaves the Kansas City Royals as the holder of the longest current losing streak at 6 games . . . The Mariners are sticking close, having lost 5 in a row . . . The longest current winning streak belongs to the last-place New York Yankees with 4 straight wins.

The Los Angeles Lakers took a 2-0 lead in their series with the San Antonio Spurs after a 101-71 drubbing of the defending champs. Obviously, the Lakers covered the line and the Under hit. Tony Parker led the Spurs with 13, yes 13, points. It was not a good night for the Spurs in any regard. Prior to the game I was speaking with Tmac by the Bay and he really felt the Spurs needed Game 1, after last night’s 30 point drubbing the 20 point lead the Spurs blew in Game 1 looks much more ominous. That being said, this is not unfamiliar territory for the Spurs and I don’t believe getting their dicks kicked in the dirt is going to do anything to their confidence. I expect the Spurs to bounce back and make a series ofd this yet. Game 3 is Sunday in San Antonio.

Tonights action: Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals is on the slate for today. The Detroit Pistons are 5 point favorites and the Total is set at 176. The series is tried, 1-1. Today’s game is in Detroit. The Celtics have yet to win on the road this post-season. They also had not lost at home, but that all changed the other night. These two teams have played once in Detroit this season, a January matchup that the Celtics won by 7. Does that give you confidence in the Celtics? If it does, I can quickly dissolve that confidence by pointing out the Celtics had the best road record in the NBA during the regular season, but as previously mentioned has yet to win a road game in the playoffs. Detroit is 4-2 ATS at home during the playoffs. The Celtics are 0-6 ATS on the road during the playoffs. I am taking the Pistons for 3-stars.

Doug Davis of the Arizona Diamondbacks won his start last night, his first since recovering from cancer surgery. Congrats to Doug Davis, inspirational to all! . . . Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals went to the Detroit Pistons, 103-97. The Pistons were underdogs, and The Dean told you to play them, hope you did. The Over hit easily. The Series is tied at 1-1, with Game 3 set for Saturday in Detroit. The loss was Boston’s first at home and puts the Celtics in a bit of a tough position. Tough in that they haven’t won on the road yet this post-season and now will have to in order to advance.

Tonights action: Game 2 between the San Antonio Spurs and the Los Angeles Lakers is tonight in LA. The Lakers are 6.5 point favorites and the Total is set at 192.5. By now everyone should know my feelings on the Spurs, they are the best team out there. They are also 4-1 ATS versus the Lakers this year. Blowing a 20-point lead in Game 1 may get to some teams, but I don’t believe it will affect the Spurs, in fact I expect it to be a tool they use to their benefit. I am taking the Spurs plus the points, and playing it for 3-stars.

The Los Angeles Lakers took Game 1 from the San Antonio Spurs 89-85. The Spurs blew a 20 point lead in the 3rd quarter though the did manage to cover the line and the Under hit. San Antonio didn’t look tired through 3 quarters, but the Lakers are a 4th quarter team and they proved it again last night outscoring the Spurs by 11 in the final frame. Kobe Bryant had 25 2nd half points. Game 2 is Friday in LA.

Tonights action: Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals tips off tonight in Boston. The Celtics are 4 point favorites and the Total is 172. Game 1 featured 12 turnovers by the Piston starters, and a performance by Chauncey Billups that raises questions about how healthy is injured hamstring is. Detroit’s 3rd quarter performance in Game 1 was disappointing, but I am relying on them being who I thought they were, and that is a team that shows resiliency. Billups injury makes me a bit nervous, as does Bostons’ home winning streak. I am playing 2-stars on the Pistons tonight plus the 4 points.
