Picks for Saturday December 2, 2006

No matter the results of today’s games the debate will rage on who deserves what. The entire process of winning a National Championship in college football has gone through a slow metamorphosis. It is frustrating and annoying but it is the nature of the beast. The beast I am referring to is large organizations that are made up of many smaller fiefdoms. When there is the amount of money involved and the number of people involved that all have some claim to some portion that big glob of money things move that much slower. It’s not JUST the money. It’s the combination of the money and the massiveness of the organization. Think government and the Catholic Church. We’ll get to religion’s stake in all this money in a second. That being said, there is one step that the NCAA must take immediately. It is the one thing that the NCAA can actually enforce and also aid in getting done.

Only half of the major conferences have a Conference Championship. I lose so much respect for the Big 10 because they don’t have it. Respect is lost because they sit and watch and then have the audacity to want to let all the others knock themselves off. The Big 10 wants a rematch? Have it. It can be hosted at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis and it will be called the Big 10 Conference Championship game. The end result of the Big 10, Pac 10 and Big East having championship games is it puts everything in more objective and fair terms. The fact that Florida is going to play a Championship game today and if they win it they have ZERO chance (according to the experts) of playing Ohio St, not even if USC loses; while Michigan sits at home and begs for a second chance.

This would increase the probability of answering all these questions on the field. It does not make it foolproof though because you can’t avoid the fools. The fools in this case are Notre Dame. I do not root against the Irish but you will notice they are the only player in the game not influenced by conference championships. The reason ND does not join a conference is because they would have to share their NBC money. Do not lose sight that Notre Dame is a Catholic institution. The Catholic Church is the most powerful organization on the face of the earth. They got there through marketing and savvy business deals. They are doing nothing wrong; they are just really good at the money game. But they are having their money cake and eating it too.

Notre Dame gets all the NBC money and the get it for themselves. They have huge rivalry games that will be played every year and ND makes everyone it touches rich. The Notre Dame game will fund the athletic departments at places like Navy and Army and even North Carolina made more off the Irish this year than any 15 or 20 UNC basketball games will make. So while I do not begrudge the Irish for making all that money for themselves and everyone else, they are also in the BCS sweepstakes. Their invitation to the ball still needs to be dealt with.

Today The Dean is going to play all 3 championship games and a pseudo-championship game, Rutgers at West Virginia. I hope you still have money to play the rest of the year, because now its gonna get real fun. If you exhibited no control and now have to sit on the sidelines, then you need to re-evaluate how, why and what you are doing. If you find it ok to be on the sidelines, then you aren’t a guy The Dean would really want at his parties.

Wake Forest v. Georgia Tech @ Jacksonville, FL

Georgia Tech -1
The lower ranked team giving points is the first thing that jumps out with this game. It’s tough to compare games against common opponents, but not unfair. So we’ll do that a little. Both lost to Clemson, WFU by 10 at home and GT by 24 on the road in a game that wasn’t close. WFU lost to Va Tech by 21 at home and GT beat Va Tech by 11 on the road. Both beat Maryland, WFU by 14 last week and GT by 4 first week of October. They both won at UNC and at NC State.
What does that all tell you? Not really sure.

The Demon Deacons have been doubted all year and they have proven everyone wrong. Today will be a little different. Wake will still be doubted The Dean as I take Georgia Tech and give the point for 2 stars.

REVIEW: Georgia Tech 6 – Wake Forest 9

Reggie Ball is pathetic.

Rutgers @ West Virginia

Rutgers +10
This game is a championship game for Rutgers. I am kicking myself over not taking Rutgers last week. A bad oversight on The Dean’s part. Liking the Scarlet Knights this week is not a knee jerk reaction to missing them last week. It’s a reaction to getting back to what you believe. Rutgers is playing with passion AND talent this year. WVU is playing with talent.

The Mountaineer’s offensive talent is in question today as you can’t get any info on the health of Pat White’s ankle. The Mountaineer defense has been lacking all year so if QB Mike Teel can be average, Rutgers will score points. The strength of Rutgers defense, their speed, will suit them well today. The Dean is making this a 3-star pick, taking Rutgers and the points.

REVIEW: Rutgers 39 – West Virginia 41 (3OT)

As previewed.

Arkansas v. Florida @ Atlanta, GA

Arkansas +2.5
If USC were to lose and Florida were to win, the Gators should play Ohio St, not Michigan. But don’t worry, Arkansas will end that debate tonight.

Florida has snuck by too many times this year for it not to bite them one of these times. That does not diminish their wins, it just makes it tough to wager on them as favorites. I also believe Arkansas’ running game will be too much for the Gators so I am taking the Razorbacks and the points for 4-stars.

REVIEW: Arkansas 28 – Florida 38

We all know where Florida should go.

Nebraska v. Oklahoma @ Kansas City, MO

Nebraska +3.5
The Dean hasn’t taken in many Big 12 games this year so this play will be small no matter the direction. The Sooners are without Adrian Peterson. That’s all I really know about this game. However, If you look at recent events you may find something to dig your teeth into. Nebraska, since dropping two in a row, has been impressive in knocking off Missouri, Texas A&M and Colorado. Their two game losing streak began with a heartbreaker against Texas so The Dean is cutting them slack in their blowout loss the following week to Oklahoma St. I am going to play 1-star on this game and take Nebraska and the points

REVIEW: Nebraska 7 – Oklahoma 21

It was good to see these teams play each other in a meaningful game.
